Being an atheist can be dangerous.
One night I dreamed I was lifting in the gym with zyzz. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed barbells in the gym. Sometimes there were two sets of barbells, other times there were one set of barbells.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of barbells.
So I said to zyzz, “You promised me zyzz, that if I was mirin you, you would lift with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of barbells in the gym. Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”
Zyzz replied, ” My precious, precious bro. I love you (no homo) and I would never, ever leave you during your times of DOMS and suffering. The times when you have seen only one set of barbells, it was then that I spotted you.”
Often times I’ve been asked about my religious view and say, “I’m agnostic” much to the confusion of my peers. I feel like an explanation is due.
I grew up attending a small catholic elementary school where religion class and Thursday mass was a part of the curriculum. I enjoyed my time there, and never questioned my faith. During my time in a public middle and high school, I continued to attend church with my family. In my latter years of high school I began to doubt the words and influences that I was raised on. When I moved out of my parents house at 18, I decided that what I had learned and discovered made having faith in humanity something I no longer had, and I changed my beliefs to agnostic.
Of course, I didn’t tell anyone. My grandmother was an Irish Catholic woman who had named all her children after saints. Also, my father and all my aunts and uncles were people of faith. The idea of living with my Christian parents when I no longer had faith made me uncomfortable. Eventually I moved back in with my parents. One night my father asked me, “Why don’t you say grace with us anymore?” and I told him of my beliefs. The response I received was what I expected. I felt shunned and ostracized to be living with a Christian family while I had no faith.
Back to the point. The different between atheism and agnosticism. Like different branches of religion, there are different types of atheism and agnosticism. Atheism is the believe that there is no higher power of the existence of deities. This doesn’t mean a disbelief in a spirit or a soul. Agnosticism is the belief that a religion or the existence of deities or a higher power is unknown.
Agnosticism can be one of many forms. It can be that the person simply believes that the information on various religions is too inconclusive to believe, or it can be a personal set of values like my own, where I believe in finding a religion that I can believe in. Someone who seeks the truth behind influences and cultures can also fall into the category.
The point in all this is simple, acceptance. A time will come when you meet someone in your life with a different creed or religion than yourself. When that happens please, withhold judgment. They may have had to face hardships or difficulties for believing in their religion. So as people, we should be warm and accepting of who they are, what they believe, and where their journey takes them in life.
Today I am going to reexamine the questions of my heart, with regards to the great flood. Really how probable is the great flood story, that is found in the bible, using logic instead of blind faith, could this event even happen, with any survivors at all? Now if the great flood had took place, my scrutiny, my questions should be easy to explain. My questioning heart, eventually lead me from the christian faith in the end, simply because I find it hard to believe, that the bible is inspired by a true God. Now these question are for those who believe in the great flood, these were the same questions, that I had pushed around in my head, that lead me to reject the great flood story. Quite honestly this was the start for me, to eventually walk away from the christian faith all together. After all if the bible is the word of God, as many claim it to be, then it should be sound enough to withstand any questioning, the proof should be easy to see, it should not take faith to follow the bible at all, but commonsense logic! To me I found no commonsense, or even logic in the great flood myth, just an impossibility that takes only blind faith to believe in.
Lets start out with Oxygen shall we, after all it’s slightly important! Lets take into consideration, according to the biblical story of the great flood, the flood water rose, some 15 feet above the tallest mountain in the world. Now the tallest mountain in the world is Mount Everest, with its elevation towering 29,029 feet. Now the higher you go up, the less oxygen one would encounter. For those who climb Mount Everest today, you will find take their time, and brings oxygen, because the oxygen thins out! How likely could each pair of species survive, from around the world, huddled together on a boat made of gopher-wood, with the problem of low oxygen levels? With the oxygen level depleting, one would expect a mass extinction, a genocide caused by suffocation.
The second question again leans back to the first question, the higher Noah ark rose up, logically the colder it would of become. Now for those trapped on the Ark, at this time, surrounded by freezing temperatures, what would happened to the inhabitants upon the ark? Would God presence alone keep them from freezing to death, or the earth as a whole, becoming like Jupiter moon Europa? Honestly I have my doubts that the earth climate has cooled down, to the point of mountain tops freezing, in just under 4000 years? Note with the Ark made of gopher wood, not to mention the provisions being stored inside like straw, and food, Noah Ark would be one giant, combustible ship. Now with the high elevation, then throwing in lowers oxygen levels, it would be both dangerous, and futile, to start a fire on a combustible ship! So how did they survive the floating death trap? Did they huddle together like penguins, trying to stay warm, or is it more logical that such an event, never could of took place?
As Noah and the fate of every species sails along, on this love boat of death, lets take a look at the earth ecosystem! Do plants need light to survive, on top of that, do plants breath through a process of photosynthesis? What would the over all weight, that the water pressure would produce, do to the earth plant life? What happens if plants get to much water, taking into account the biblical story, that the earth was submerged under water? Truly if the plants get to much water they die, yet they supposedly survived, being submerged under tons of water, thousands of feet deep! How could the plant life possibly survive, void of light, over watered, being crushed by the extreme conditions, of a world wide flooding? That would be like the ultimate survivor moment, following the the love Boat of Death, of Noah, his family, and every other species on board! One should question the logic of God, in doing such a stupid thing, or look at the reality of it, that it could never of happened in the first place! Like the love boat of death, the earth ecosystem would be destroyed, void of most, if not all plant life!
Now if the world was ever flooded, then you should expect to see, that the world would still be flooded! The reason for this is our wonderful atmosphere, that traps the water from leaving the Earth! Now if the world did flood, like the bible claims, then the evidence for the flooding, should still be present to this day! Again I have another simple, yet relevant question to ask, what happened to all the water? How could the Earth soak up, that much water, and with the process of water evaporating, mixing with dust, becoming dense clouds, does that not cause rain? Now I heard a mind numbing claim, that back in the biblical days, that it never rained? Really how reliable is this claim, after all science explains where rain comes from very will? The reason I would like to point this fact, points back to one thing, water does not leave the earth atmosphere!
Going on as we reexamining this logic, behind such a hard to believe story, I leave you with another question! Now if the ark had rested upon Mount Ararat, some 4000 years ago, where is the fossil records to prove this event ever had took place? After all one would expect to find many fossil, every species should be traceable back to Mt Ararat. Yet to my knowledge there is no proof in the fossil records, that supports the biblical claim, regarding that every species on earth, ever landing on Mt Ararat, or even of Noah’s Ark? That poses a big problem, but not bigger than the next question, I have to ask!
Lets say with a laugh, that Gods love boat of death, actually managed to rescue every breathing species, from a watery grave, that was brought about by a loving, yet vengeful god! Every species pair, actually was able to fit on the Ark, along with all the supplies needed for such a journey! Lets throw in for fun, that the plant life also survived, the extreme water pressure caused by the flooding, not being able to receive sunlight, or to breath! Lets take all of this into account and ask yourself, how did these species of animals get back, to their current habitat locations, that spread to every continent, around the world? Did they take the long swim, and flights across the oceans, as the water were still abating? How could each species migrate across a continent, not mentioning across the ocean? Now I have heard a ridicules claim, how the bible details the survivors, Noah and his family, how they built more ships, and they sent the animals back on boats, to their current location, yet I have never seen such a verse, or verses! Now if such a verse, or verses are true in the bible, then please enlighten me, and the others who may read this post, I for one would like to read them? From my past bible studies, I have never seen any mention, how each species, pair, was relocated back to their current location! For the most part I find it hard to believe, that each pair could migrated by land, by air, and by sea, back to their current locations, being able to repopulate the entire world!
Now I would have to accept Popeye the sailor man was real, before accepting the biblical claim of the great flood, after all in the comics, and cartoons, they detail of his existence. The cartoon details how Popeye gets supper strength, after eating his spinach. He would be perfect for the job of relocating each species pair, back to their current location. Popeye would be able to pick up each elephant pair, to send them back to Africa, or to knock out a hungry mountain lion, without killing it, if it would dared try to eat him?
Now I have heard claims mentioned by some believers, that point out the flood mentioned in the bible, had only hit a single region, and was not world wide. These views are not mainstream within the church at all, some in the church would say they are hearsay probable, personally I don’t know, or care either way. The problem with this view, are the days mentioned during the flooding period, that span to when the waters were abating, from when the ark eventually resting on Mt Ararat, tell Noah and every living creature, managed to escaped that death trap. These people saw how flawed the logic was of a world wide flood, reducing it to a more believable idea, of a single region being flooded, yet the bible contradicts their claim.
Genesis 7:17-20 17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. 18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly on the earth; and the ark went on the face of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. 20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. Genesis 8:1-5 1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged; 2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; 3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. 4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat. 5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
Its clear to me, with regards to the scriptures above, that this was not recording a flash flood situation. Now if this region was flooded for over five months, that must of been one hell of a storm? The bible does in fact paint a picture of a world wide flood, not a flooding of a single region. The logic of a regional flooding, may help some with their unbelief, after all the world flooding is an unbelievable story, if you are honest to yourself. Yet the bible being outdated, built up around ancient myths, does indeed, point back to the world wide flood impossibility.
In closing, looking at the reality of the biblical claim of the great flood, it was plagiarized from the Sumerian epic poem, “The Epic of Gilgamesh.” The reality of this is true, because this is the oldest known writing of such an event, and it was fictional! True many stories of the great flood pops up, before the biblical account, to me that only points against the biblical claim! The biblical claim recorded in the bible was not the original, that to me points to plagiarism! Now I have had many people of faith, telling me that the older tales of the great flood, reflects on an actual event. For me, logically speaking, I fail to see any truth, in such a desperate attempt, to support the biblical claim even happened! I would love people to please send me your responses, please explain to me how any of these events, could of ever possibly took place, using facts, not faith?
